Held at the Brookfield Orchards on Lincoln Road in North Brookfield in October, the Apple Run/Walk is organized and run by the cooperative effort of the Brookfields' Lions club and the NorthBrookfieldYouthCenter. The third annual run/walk was held on October 18th,of last year on a sunny day which was enjoyed by all participants.
Runners enjoy a 5 mile scenic course which winds its way along country roads by farms, fields, woods, and a portion of LakeLashaway. Walkers have the option of the same course or a shorter version of approximately 3 miles. Prize money totaling $600 was given to the top 3 runners in each of the men's and women's fields this year.
All proceeds from the Apple Run/Walk are split between two diabetes recipients: The Clara Barton Camp in Oxford, MA which serves diabetic girls throughout the year for camp enjoyment as well as providing education to best understand and manage their diabetes. Proceeds are also distributed to the diabetic research center at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester. Money raised for these two worthy causes through the first three years of this event has totaled over $3800.00.
The 2008 first place runner was Tim Craig (23.09 min) and the female winner was Elizabeth Cannell (38.22). Congratulations to both and all participants who came out in support of diabetes for our event. The date for this year's run/walk will be Saturday, November 7th.The majority of the course has been freshly paved this year, and we have procured the services of 5K Sports Race Managment for our offical timer.Water stations are available along the course. Cash prizes will again be awarded to the top three finishers male and female, with other prizes for top finishers in each age category.
